All payphones in MTR stations will be removed next month when the contract with service provider Shinetown Telecom expires. Executive director of Shinetown, Fan Rongyao, said payphones ceased to be profitable about 10 years ago and the launch of the iPhone3 in 2008 struck a deadly blow. Fan recalled that in 2001 there were more than 6,000 payphones across the city. One payphone at South Horizons in Ap Lei Chau made more than HK$10,000 a month thanks to its popularity with foreign domestic helpers.
