A model of the Tian Tan Buddha made from more than 10,000 cans of seafood at Hong Kong airport has received a prestigious international design award.

The 2.4 metre Buddha installation, which attracted thousands of fans when it was exhibited last year, has been honoured with the Founder’s Award in the Canstruction International Competition 2016.

It was designed and built by a team at the Hong Kong Airport Authority over a period of several weeks, who modelled it on the iconic bronze statue on Lantau Island as the competition’s theme was ‘World Famous Attractions’.

The structure, entitled ‘Above the Clouds’, has since been dismantled, with its 61 layers of cans donated to charity Food Angel, who distribute supplies to local food banks.

Speaking to the South China Morning Post, architect Neil Preston said the Buddha became an obvious choice for an iconic Hong Kong image.
