A road in Kwai Chung was flooded and partly caved in on Sunday morning after an underground salt water pipe burst.

A double-decker bus was trapped in the 30-metre by10-metre sinkhole on Lei Muk Road for three hours with its two front wheels stuck in the hole.

A Water Supplies Department spokesman said workers turned off the supply at the affected section around 7am on Sunday and that repair work was expected to be completed at around 8am on Monday.

He said the incident would not affect salt water supply for the area as the affected section was not located in the main supply pipe.

The incident happened around 5am, affecting a 250mm-wide pipe on Lei Muk Road near its intersection with Wo Yi Hop Road.

Salt water containing sand and soil gushed out, flooding a large area of the road. Some pedestrians had to take off their shoes to cross the road.
