About a dozen people visited a Catholic church in Hong Kong after hearing that the Virgin Mary was thought to have shown herself there last week.

A message about the incident was posted on a Facebook page on Sunday.

It read: “Mary was suspected to have manifested ... at St. Jude’s Church in North Point [last Wednesday]! Her eyes on the statue in church usually look downward, but on that day four Catholic friends saw her eyes open and looking forward. It lasted half an hour. Was it the light or was it a miracle? Believe it or not.”

However, when a Post journalist visited the church on Tuesday, a woman working in the parish’s office said: “People talked about it on the internet, but it was because the light bulb broke that day. Those light bulbs break from time to time.”

A man who was mopping the floor in the chapel also said: “You can try the light switch and see for yourself. When you switch on the spotlight, there’s light on Mary’s eyelids and her eyes seem to be looking relatively downward.”
