South China Morning Post scoops top awards at Society of Publishers in Asia ceremony in Hong Kong
The South China Morning Post had an impressive showing on Wednesday night at the region’s top annual publishing awards.
Hong Kong’s No 1 English- language newspaper grabbed four top prizes and four honourable mentions at this year’s Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Editorial Awards held at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.
A report on the collapse of an illegal waste dump in Shenzhen in December last year by China desk reporters He Huifeng, Mimi Lau and Zhuang Pinghui won an excellence award in reporting breaking news.
Senior China writer Verna Yu’s article on the nation’s one-child policy won an excellence award in reporting on women’s issues.
Principal China reporter Minnie Chan won an honourable mention in the “Scoop Award” category with her exclusive article last September on Beijing’s plans to overhaul the People’s Liberation Army.
Business news editor Debasish Roy Chowdhury also took an excellence award in explanatory reporting, with his in-depth series of articles about Chinese investments in Sri Lanka.
A work entitled “HKU” by veteran Post cartoonist Harry Harrison won an excellence award for editorial cartooning.
This year saw keener competition at the SOPA awards, with a record 700-plus entries competing in 18 categories. There were about 660 entries last year.
The story of the plight of a Filipino maid in Hong Kong by online producer Kristine Servando and senior video producer Robin Fall won an honourable mention in the “Excellence in Digital News” category.
A feature on the cut-throat competition in the city’s tutoring industry by Shirley Zhao of the Hong Kong desk earned an honourable mention in the “Excellence in Feature Writing” category, while an infographic by Alberto Lucas Lopez on the Dragon Boat Festival secured an honourable mention for “Excellence in Information Graphics”.
