The two firefighters killed while battling one of the longest-running fires in the city are likely to be awarded gold medals for bravery, the Post has learned.

The news emerged on Tuesday morning as more than a hundred firefighters gathered outside the Ngau Tau Kok industrial building where a fourth-alarm blaze took place last week to mourn the death of senior fireman Samuel Hui Chi-kit, 37.

A similar ritual was held for senior station officer Thomas Cheung, 30, on Monday afternoon.

A source told the Post that it was “likely” that the two deceased firefighters would be awarded gold medals for bravery posthumously on Friday.

Before the Executive Council’s weekly meeting on Tuesday morning, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying was asked if medals would be awarded to the two firemen. He said: “We still need to go through some process, but personally, I think the two firefighters deserve the medals.”
