Woman sent to Hong Kong hospital after falling onto train tracks at Kowloon Tong station

She was rescued from under the train, but it was still not known if her fall was an accident or done intentionally

A woman was rescued from under a train and sent to hospital after falling onto the railway tracks at Kowloon Tong MTR station on Thursday.

At 10.40am, an MTR employee at the station witnessed a female passenger falling onto the tracks while a train was entering the station, an MTR spokeswoman said.

The employee then pressed the platform’s emergency button, which prevents trains from entering or exiting the station. The train driver also hit the brakes when he saw the woman on the tracks.

But the 41-year-old passenger, who was still conscious, was found under the train and rescued by firefighters at 11am, according to a Fire Services Department spokeswoman.

The woman was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was being treated for back injuries, according to a police spokeswoman. Police added that she had a history of mental illness.

Train services were affected for about half an hour until 11.05am before gradually resuming to normal.

There were no trains running between Mong Kok East and Tai Wai stations during the incident, while trains along other stations on the East Rail line were operating at eight to 15-minute intervals.
