Hong Kong is in for a rare treat next year when it marks the 20th anniversary of the city’s return to Chinese sovereignty, with two exhibitions of collections from Beijing’s Palace Museum showcasing priceless national treasures as well as the pivotal historic moments they have been a part of.

The arrangements for the loan of the prized artefacts, some of which have never left the capital before, are expected to be discussed as part of the “cultural cooperation project” that Chief Secretary Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor is involved in during her two-day visit to Beijing.

Lam, as chair of the cross-departmental steering committee on the 20th anniversary celebrations, announced earlier this month that the two major exhibitions of rare artefacts from the Palace Museum would be featured in Hong Kong from June to October next year.

Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Betty Fung Ching Suk-yee said other exhibitions have been staged in Hong Kong since its agreement with the Palace Museum in 2012, but none were comparable with the 2017 arrangement.

One exhibition, titled “Celebrating Imperial Birthdays in the Qing Dynasty”, will feature exquisite relics associated with birthdays of the Qing emperors and empresses at the Hong Kong Museum of History.
