The New Year was rung in with the tiny cries of a boy and a girl at two Hong Kong hospitals as the city welcomed the arrival of 2017.
The first baby, a boy, was born at the stroke of midnight to Sun Chi-fai and Tsang Sze-wing at Hong Kong Baptist Hospital in Kowloon Tong.

Speaking at her bedside on Sunday, the first-time mother said she hoped the couple’s newborn son could grow up happy and healthy.
The pair had yet to choose a name for the boy, who weighed 3.15kg.
Sun, an office worker, said he hoped Hong Kong could become a better place as their son grew up.

“It’s our home,” the father said of the city.
His wife, also an office worker, said the baby arrived seven days earlier than expected.
They had yet to map out plans for the little boy.

“I don’t want to be a tiger mum ... He doesn’t have to be an academic high achiever,” she said as she held and gazed at him.
“I want him to be a polite man, with a strong sense of morality and knowledge of right and wrong.”

The boy’s birth was followed at 12.19am New Year’s Day by that of a 3.02 kg girl born to Andrew Hui and Wong Nga-man.

The baby, the couple’s first child, arrived nine days earlier than expected.
“I feel wonderful,” Hui said, as the newborn cried loudly in her mother’s arms. “I want her to be a good girl who will be brought up to be respectful to others.”
The mother, who works as a nurse at Tseung Kwan O Hospital, described being “touched deeply” by her daughter’s arrival. “A new life is born,” she said.
The couple thanked the medical staff at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kowloon, where the girl was delivered. Her name had yet to be chosen.
According to the Hospital Authority, two other babies – another boy and girl – were also born in local public hospitals between midnight and 1am New Year’s Day, as Hong Kong welcomed 2017 with a spectacular fireworks display over Victoria Harbour and countdowns at several locations in town.
