United States assault vessel Makin Island arrives in Hong Kong on port visit
The ship carries nearly 1,100 sailors and 1,500 marines
The United States’ amphibious assault vessel USS Makin Island (LHD-8) arrived in Hong Kong on Friday.
The 256-metre-long wasp-class ship, now berthed in Victoria Harbour off Sheung Wan, houses nearly 1,100 sailors and 1,500 marines and is currently operating in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region to enhance amphibious capability with regional partners, a statement from the US consulate said.
“While in Hong Kong, sailors and marines will have the opportunity to participate in the community and sporting events with local schools,” the statement said.
“Makin Island’s stop in Hong Kong comes after multi-month operations in the Middle East supporting coalition efforts under Operation Inherent Resolve.”
The consulate did not say how long the Makin Island would remain in Hong Kong.
The San Diego based Makin Island is the flagship vessel for the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and serves as a ready-response force or as humanitarian assistance for the United States.
It is a multi-mission platform capable of launching and recovering aircraft and amphibious landing craft.
The last time the vessel visited Hong Kong was in August, 2014.
