The principal of a Hong Kong primary school where a teacher fell to her death has been placed on leave while school authorities investigate the incident.

Officials said an independent panel will be set up to look into the death of 48-year-old Lam Lai-tong last week, while principal Law Yuen-yee was said to “need some rest”.

On Sunday, senior officials of the TWGHs Leo Tung-hai Lee Primary School’s sponsoring body, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, a leading Hong Kong charity group, met the teacher’s family, as well as other members of staff from the school.

The influential Professional Teachers’ Union, meanwhile, also urged the government to tighten up monitoring to ensure proper control over the operations of schools.

Lam, who taught Chinese language and library studies, died last Wednesday at the school in Tin Shui Wai after falling from a six-storey campus building.

Family members told reporters the teacher had been under a great deal of stress at the school where she had worked for more than 20 years.
