Chinese University president Rocky Tuan Sung-chi has broken his silence over the arrest of a student accused of throwing unknown powder at security guards, condemning the campus assault as “malicious, shocking and worrisome”.

Tuan’s remarks in a pre-recorded video came five days after a black-clad group charged the security counter at the entrance near University MTR station in Sha Tin last Monday, knocking down railings and launching a mystery white substance at guards before fleeing.

A 20-year-old studying at the university was caught by staff following a brief chase and arrested, while a guard coming into contact with the powder reported feeling unwell and was sent to hospital.

In the two-minute clip released by the university on Saturday night, Tuan expressed regret over the incident and offered his sympathies to the staff members assaulted while carrying out their duties.

“The acts of the black-clad individuals were purely malicious and threatened the safety of university members on campus with potentially very serious consequences,” he said.
