National security law: Hong Kong students guaranteed ‘bright future’ in city, education chief says, even as statistics show surge in withdrawals
- Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung also insists he has not noticed any trend of teachers leaving
- Recent survey by Professional Teachers’ Union shows quarter of 183 schools polled had more than 20 pupils withdrawing in last academic year

“I can assure all parents that students will have a bright future if they stay in Hong Kong,” Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung Yun-hung said on Saturday after attending the opening of an international expo for the sector.
“The quality of education in Hong Kong is comparable to all major countries and cities in the rest of the world ... But of course when parents decide where their children will study, they must have many other considerations, then that’s a decision for parents to make.”

The education chief gave his views after the Professional Teachers’ Union (PTU) said on Wednesday that a quarter of 183 schools polled had more than 20 pupils withdrawing during the 2020-21 academic year.
More than 70 per cent of the schools also said they saw between one and 20 pupils withdrawing, while only three schools reported no drop-outs.
