Priscilla Wong Pui-sze, a barrister who chairs the city’s police watchdog, has been made the new head of the University of Hong Kong’s (HKU) governing council.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, in her capacity as HKU chancellor, has appointed Wong to lead the council for a three-year term, effective January 1. Wong has been a council member since 2017.

Wong, in her 60s, was in June made chairwoman of the Independent Police Complaints Council (IPCC), which reviews the force’s handling of complaints against police and reports directly to Lam.
She also chairs the Minimum Wage Commission and has served on the council of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
In the 1980s, she was a pupil barrister of Andrew Li Kwok-nang, who became the city’s chief justice in 1997.
In a statement, Wong said she was privileged to serve her alma mater.
