Hong Kong authorities have decided to intervene in the months-long dispute between the president of the city’s top university and its governing body after infighting escalated in the past three weeks.

Tensions first came to light last September when the 25 members of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) governing council received multiple emails from critics, accusing president Xiang Zhang of misconduct over a range of issues, including his handling of donations.

But the conflict persisted even after an independent panel set up by council chairwoman Priscilla Wong Pui-sze cleared Zhang of the allegations in April.

Last month, the council endorsed the appointment of several interim vice-president positions without consulting Zhang, prompting the president to seek legal advice as the row escalated.
