Car owners can worry a bit less about thieves eyeing their vehicles in car parks, thanks to an award-winning system designed by Polytechnic University.

Dr George Ho To-sum, from the university's department of industrial and systems engineering, said the system can alert security guards if someone is detected wandering around an area for a specific time.

The system, known as the Advanced Automobile Parking Navigation Platform, can also make parking hassle-free. A driver can avoid searching for a vacant spot in a car park by reserving a space in advance through a mobile app, which would ease congestion and reduce pollution.

More than 30 car parks managed by Sino Parking have been using the system since 2012, said Ho.

Angus Kwong, a member of the project team, is introducing the mobile application to the participants.

The university team has just won a special merit award and gold medal at the 43rd International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva.

Ho said the system's sensors alert car park security guards when someone is wandering around in an area for a suspiciously long period of time.
