"False and unproven," UPS denies endangered shark-fin shipments
Protesters call firm's ethical stand a 'sham' and demand it halts deliveries
Global logistics giant United Parcel Service has denied claims it ships shark fins from endangered and protected species to Hong Kong, saying it has been unfairly targeted by conservation groups.
The Lai Chi Kok branch of UPS faced a protest yesterday from about a dozen members of the Shark Foundation and WildAid Hong Kong, calling for the US firm to stop all shark-fin shipments, whether they were from endangered species or not.
The protest took place in conjunction with planned rallies on the same day at UPS locations in Costa Rica, the United States and Australia.
A spokesman for UPS in Hong Kong said the claims were "false and unproven" and the company would "seek appropriate remedies" if the allegations tarnished the brand's reputation.
"UPS strongly denies allegations made by organisations suggesting UPS has shipped hammerhead shark fins," the spokesman said.
He would not confirm or deny whether the delivery company transported fins from other shark species.
