A century-old colonial building and former home to the New Territories’ first police headquarters has been revamped and rebuilt into a green hub that promotes sustainable living.

The heritage site called Green Hub, run by the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, was selected by the Development Bureau to transform Old Tai Po Police Station, which had been in disuse since 1987.

Green Hub officially opened today and offers guided tours of its heritage exhibitions as well as cookery and conservation courses, accommodation in their residential quarters during educational retreats, and a vegetarian canteen.

Attending today’s opening ceremony, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said: “[These historic sites] have been truly revitalized and can now truly serve the community again, while preserving their original flair.”

“To put it philosophically, they have come back to life,” he added.

After almost two years of rebuilding, project architects said they tried to stay true to the original aesthetic design of the old canteen, courtyard and dormitory by comparing photos dating to 1905, while also ensuring that it complied with modern safety standards.

Green Hub also aimed to minimise its carbon footprint by sourcing local and organic ingredients, and serving a variety of raw dishes.
