Cold winter monsoon to chill Hong Kong for New Year spring festival
Urban areas could be as cold as 9 degrees on Sunday

Temperatures are set to drop into unseasonably cold single digits during the Lunar New Year holiday.
The Hong Kong Observatory has forecast that Hong Kong will endure wintery conditions over the weekend, under the influence of a cold winter monsoon.

People in urban areas can expect minimum temperatures of 9 degrees Celsius on Sunday. And it could be even cooler in the New Territories, with a maximum of 14 degrees predicted. Saturday’s temperatures are set to range between 11 and 15 degrees.

“Fine, dry and cold in the next few days,” the latest weather forecast bulletin says. “The temperature difference between day and night will be relatively large. The minimum temperature over the Lunar New Year’s Eve and Day will be around 9 degrees in the urban areas, and a few degrees lower on high ground and in the New Territories.”

Both Saturday and Sunday will see force 5 fresh winds but those are expected to ramp up to strong force 7 winds offshore and on higher ground.
