Water sports and tai chi: Chief Executive CY Leung shares vision of new Hong Kong Island waterfront

Government will soon launch public consultation on plan for new public area, which promises space for yoga, cycling, dog walking and other activities

Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has laid out his scenic vision for a new waterfront on Hong Kong Island ahead of launching a public consultation.

A new public area stretching from Wan Chai North to North Point has been envisaged, with promotion of water sports activities as the centrepiece of the scheme.

The city’s top official also extolled the virtues of tai chi, yoga, cycling and dog walking as the scheme’s primary benefits, with more open space created.

The government will launch a public consultation on the scheme shortly, Leung said, as the development seeks to plug a major gap in the Hong Kong Island shoreline.

The chief executive said on his blog: “In future, we can have more water-based leisure activities.”

The focus on recreational activities echoes Leung’s earlier failed attempt to drum up support for lunchtime swimming in Victoria Harbour and an angling zone for the working class.

Leung had said that the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Plant, which was commissioned to clean up Victoria Harbour, would allow Hongkongers to take a dip in cleaner waters.
