Floating swimming pools, water slides and diving towers are some of the eye-catching ideas the government has floated under the second stage of public consultation on plans to revitalise the Hong Kong Island harbourfront.

The Causeway Bay typhoon shelter will also receive a makeover, with sampans ferrying diners from the shore to floating restaurants.

Writing on his weekly blog, development secretary Paul Chan Mo-po highlighted the importance of place-making in utilising Hong Kong’s precious public space.

He recalled crowds building up along the Central harbourfront earlier this month to listen to Canto-pop star Leon Lai’s concert, which was held inside a semi-open tent with poor sound insulation. Those without tickets could free-ride by standing at the venue perimeter. Chan said the scenes were “deeply touching”.

The Planning Department and the Harbourfront Commission launched a public consultation last year on how to develop a three-kilometre stretch of harbourfront between Wan Chai North and North Point.

Stage two of the public opinion exercise will begin on June 11, although the aim remains the same – “reconnect people to the water”.
