Holiday fun in the sun as Hong Kong enjoys its hottest day of the year

Temperature tops 30 degrees Celsius, but rain is on way

Hong Kong basked in its warmest day this year as temperatures soared past 30 degrees Celsius in parts of Kowloon and the New Territories on Sunday afternoon.

The Observatory cited the influence of a southerly airstream over the coast of Guangdong, which was bringing hotter than usual weather to the region.

In Yuen Long, maximum temperatures shot up as high as 31.4 degrees and the thermometer also went past 30 in Lau Fau Shan, Sheung Shui, Shek Kong and Tsuen Wan around mid-afternoon.

“Springtime April is often the interchange of warm and cold air,” scientific officer Chong Sze-ning said. “If the warmer air being ushered from the south is stronger than the cool air pushing down from the north, it could lead to hotter weather.”

Average maximum temperatures in April rarely go above 25 degrees. But according to historical records, the hottest April day took place on the 27th in 1957, when the mercury went up to a scorching 33.4 degrees.

The city had already experienced one of the warmest starts to a year since weather records were first compiled in 1884. Mean temperatures from December to February hovered at a balmy 18.4 degrees – 1.4 degrees higher than the 30-year normal reading between 1981 and 2010.

The Observatory said in March there was a 70 per cent chance this year would be one of the city’s top 10 warmest on record.

While Hongkongers were spared rain over the Easter weekend, wet and stormy weather will move in during the latter part of this week and over the weekend as a trough of low pressure over the south China coast brings showers and thunderstorms to the region. Temperatures will drop back into the range of the low to mid-twenties.

A tropical depression passing through the central Philippines is expected to weaken further on Monday but Chong said the storm was quite a distance away and was unlikely to affect Hong Kong’s weather.
