Hong Kong diver drowns during night excursion off coast of Sai Kung
- The victim, surnamed Chan, was found floating unconscious in the water by a friend just after midnight
- He was rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital, but was pronounced dead soon afterwards
A 37-year-old Hong Kong man drowned during a night dive in the sea off Sai Kung on Saturday night.
The man, surnamed Chan, went out with six other friends at Bate Head, which is also known as Tuen Tsui, at around 10pm.
Chan, who was in full dive gear, was found floating in the water by one of his friends, who called police at 12.26am, according to the force.
“The friend tried to rescue the unconscious man, and reported the case,” a police spokesman said. “Chan was certified dead after he arrived at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin.”
Police have said there were no suspicious circumstances, and are waiting for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
According to the Hong Kong Underwater Association, Bate Head is located to the east of Sai Kung and the water surrounding it is well known for diving. However, it is not considered suitable for beginners, or for snorkelling.
“As there’s no shelter blocking the water, it could be dangerous when it is hit by wind and wave,” the association states in its recreational diving safety manual.
“Because of the environment, the place is not a suitable diving spot for beginners. Experienced divers should also pay attention.”
