First No 1 typhoon standby signal of season issued as tropical depression comes within 400km of Hong Kong
- System responsible for bringing unsettled weather including torrential rain and thunderstorms
- Rain expected for the rest of week, with some sunshine expected from Friday
Hong Kong’s weather forecasters raised the No 1 typhoon standby signal on Tuesday afternoon, the first for the season this year.
The standby signal was raised at 4.15pm and the Hong Kong Observatory said a tropical depression was 400km (250 miles) south of the city.
“The area of low pressure over the northern part of the South China Sea has intensified into a tropical depression,” the Observatory said.
The system was responsible for bringing unsettled weather including torrential rain and thunderstorms earlier on Tuesday.
The likelihood of upgrading the warning to a strong wind signal No 3 on Tuesday was “not high”, the Observatory said.
According to the Observatory’s latest tracking of the system, the tropical depression was set to drift further west heading towards Hainan Island in mainland China by Wednesday, where it was expected to strengthen into a tropical storm.
