Warm spell set to end as forecasters predict cold weather will return to Hong Kong this weekend
- New front moving over Guangdong province expected to hit city on Friday, dropping temperature to about 15 degrees Celsius

Hong Kong’s warm and sunny Christmas holidays are coming to an end, with the temperature forecast to drop to 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) on Friday, with rain also expected this weekend.
The city got some relatively cool days earlier this month, with the temperature dropping to 14.7 degrees in the city centre on December 9. Things have been warmer since then, with the temperature reaching nearly 24 degrees at noon on Thursday.
But the Hong Kong Observatory said a cold front over inland Guangdong province had been moving southwards, and was expected to reach the coast on Thursday night.
“There will be northerly winds, and the weather [in Hong Kong] will become appreciably cooler on Thursday night,” said Lee Fung-ying, a scientific officer at the Observatory.
“The lowest temperature will decrease to about 17 degrees … so residents are advised to bring a jacket with them if they are coming home late at night.”
The weather will be fine and dry on Friday, with relative humidity of about 50 to 75 per cent.
