Hong Kong shivers through coldest day of the year as temperature drops below 8 degrees Celsius

Hong Kong shivered through the coldest day of the year on Monday, with a minimum temperature of 10.3 degrees Celsius (50.54 Fahrenheit) recorded at the city’s observatory.
Forecasters said an intense winter monsoon was bringing cold weather to the southern part of China. Similar temperatures are expected for the next few days, with temperatures rising gradually in the latter part of the week.
At 8.40am on Monday, temperatures as low as 7.9 degrees were recorded in Lau Fau Shan, an area close to the border with mainland China.
The Hong Kong Observatory’s scientific officer Tam Hiu-ching said it was normal to see temperatures of about 10 degrees in February.
“It is difficult to say it’s related to climate change, since 10 degrees in February is not such a rare phenomenon,” she said.
Monday’s temperature was expected to reach a high of 17 degrees.
