Hong Kong Observatory drops typhoon warning for Tropical Cyclone Nuri as rough weather fears subside

  • As of 11am on Sunday, Tropical Cyclone Nuri was about 260km west-southwest of the city and was expected to move northwest and weaken gradually
  • Signal No 3 was issued on Saturday before it was downgraded to No 1 and dropped altogether the following day

Fears of rough weather in Hong Kong subsided on Sunday as the city’s Observatory downgraded typhoon signal No 3 before dropping the warnings altogether.

The No 1 signal was taken down at 1.20pm after it was issued at 10.40am on Sunday, replacing the No 3 alert which was in force from 3.40pm on Saturday.

As of 11am on Sunday, Tropical Cyclone Nuri was about 260km west-southwest of the city and the weather forecaster said that it was expected to move northwest when it would gradually weaken.

“Local winds continue to moderate. We will cancel all tropical cyclone warning signals when Nuri no longer poses a threat to Hong Kong,” the Observatory said on Sunday morning.

“The rainbands of Nuri are affecting the coast of Guangdong. There are also swells.”

Sunday will remain mainly cloudy with occasional squally showers and thunderstorms. Showers are also expected on Monday and Tuesday.

The No 1 signal means there is a tropical cyclone within 800km of Hong Kong.
