Hong Kong’s Covid-19 patients will be isolated in designated public housing blocks and hotels or sent to health clinics to ease the strain on hospitals swamped with anxious people seeking help, amid unprecedented scenes of some patients having to wait outdoors on beds before being wheeled in.

A three-year-old girl, who had no underlying medical issues, died on Tuesday night after being admitted to hospital on Saturday, becoming the city’s youngest Covid-related fatality.
A 100-year-old chronically ill woman also died, becoming the oldest pandemic-related fatality, and taking the total number of coroanvirus-related deaths to 227.
Health officials reported more than 1,600 infections and 5,400 suspected cases on Tuesday, while reiterating that the daily numbers no longer reflected the real situation because of a backlog of test samples.
They said they would speed up the process by no longer requiring test results from the Hospital Authority to be further confirmed by the health department’s laboratory.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said there would be no citywide lockdown as she announced plans to cope with the exponential surge of Covid-19 patients.
