Hong Kong’s long, hot and humid spell this year could be petering out, with the city’s forecaster saying temperatures will drop as low as 20 degrees Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) next week.

A low-pressure cyclone is expected to cross the Luzon Strait, between Taiwan and the Philippines, this Sunday. Under the combined influence of a northeast monsoon, the development will bring strong winds and cooler weather from early to the middle of next week.

The Observatory on Wednesday also said another area of low pressure was developing close to the Philippines and would likely bring unsettled weather to the region, including Hong Kong.

According to the latest nine-day weather forecast, temperatures for Monday to Friday of next week would peak at below 30 degrees and reach their coolest point next Wednesday at 20 degrees.

Under the present conditions, the northeast monsoon was contributing to Hong Kong’s dry climate, the forecaster said.
