Hong Kong Observatory cancels amber rain signal on Wednesday afternoon

  • Residents earlier warned to stay alert for possible flash flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas
  • Forecaster also predicted bouts of hot weather and more showers during next three days, due to southerly airstream

The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled an amber rainstorm warning on Wednesday afternoon, hours after calling on residents to stay alert for possible widespread heavy showers and flash flooding over the next few hours.

An amber rainstorm signal means heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 30mm in an hour, and is likely to continue.

During the morning, the forecaster said flash flooding was expected in low-lying and poorly drained areas across the city.

Residents had been warned by the Observatory to avoid watercourses, while anyone likely to be affected by the flooding should take safety precautions.

The forecaster also predicted bouts of hot weather and more showers during the next three days, attributing such conditions to a southerly airstream.
