Hong Kong is bracing for its first typhoon of the year, with the No 1 warning signal expected before 6am on Saturday morning and temperatures over the weekend set to rise to 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit) from the effects of an approaching tropical depression.

The Observatory on Friday said the weather pattern currently located within 700km (434 miles) of the city was expected to gradually intensify, bringing strong winds from Sunday to Tuesday.

“The tropical depression over the seas west of Luzon is moving slowly,” the observatory said. “The tropical depression is expected to gradually intensify in the next couple of days and move in the general direction of west Guangdong and Hainan Island.”

It added that the possibility of higher alerts depended on the “proximity of the tropical cyclone” to the Pearl River Delta as well as its intensity.

The weather is expected to be sunny and “extremely hot” on Saturday with temperatures reaching as high as 36 degrees, before strong winds hit from Sunday.
