The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled an amber rainstorm warning on Monday after just more than an hour, but said the city was still facing another week of wet weather brought on by a trough of low pressure and a tropical cyclone.

The signal was sent out at 7.50am, before cancelling it about an hour and 10 minutes later.

The forecaster earlier called for residents to remain alert as it warned widespread heavy rain could affect the city in a couple of hours.

It said a trough of low pressure would bring showers and squally thunderstorms to Guangdong on Monday and Tuesday.

“With a strong easterly airstream reaching the coast of Guangdong midweek this week, the trough of low pressure is expected to move southwards slightly, and bring unsettled weather to the coast of southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea in the middle and latter parts of this week,” the Observatory said.

Tropical Cyclone Ewiniar would also move across the seas east of Luzon on Monday and Tuesday, before moving towards the western North Pacific to the south of Japan, it said.

According to by the Observatory’s latest nine-day forecast, occasional heavy showers will batter the city before weakening on Wednesday.

The city will see mainly cloudy weather with a few showers between Thursday and next Monday, with sunny intervals appearing next Tuesday.
