The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled an amber rainstorm signal an hour after it was issued on Tuesday afternoon, with the forecaster earlier warning of possible floods.

The signal went out at 1.45pm and was lifted at 2.45pm. The warning means more than 70mm of hourly rainfall had fallen or was expected to fall.

The forecaster said intense gusts of about 80km/h (49mph) were logged at Star Ferry at 1.55pm and had urged those outdoors to seek safe shelter.

Those in high-risk areas were also told at the time to take precautions to prevent flood damage.
