Hongkongers woke up on Monday to a week of thunderstorms and heavy downpours after days of scorching heat, with the forecaster issuing an amber rainstorm warning in the morning.

The Hong Kong Observatory raised the signal at 7.55am, but cancelled it more than two hours later at 10am.

It also called on residents who were outdoors to seek safe shelter as intense gusts could continue to affect the city.

“Under the influence of upper-air disturbances and a southwesterly airstream, there will be showers and thunderstorms over the coast of Guangdong in the next couple of days,” the forecaster said.

“A broad trough of low pressure is expected to linger over the coast of southern China in the middle and latter parts of this week. The weather will remain unsettled over the region.”
