Hongkongers can expect showers and thunderstorms over the weekend due to a broad trough of low pressure, with the city’s weather forecaster issuing an amber rainstorm warning for several hours on Saturday morning.

The Hong Kong Observatory sent out the warning at 5.35am and said a red rainstorm signal could be issued, depending on the weather. The amber alert was cancelled at 10.55am.

More than 50mm (2 inches) of rainfall was generally recorded over the city hours after the warning was issued. Rainfall levels exceeded 100mm over some urban areas and parts of Lantau Island and Cheung Chau.

The forecaster called on residents to stay alert and reminded those who were outside to seek safe shelter as intense gusts might continue to affect Hong Kong.

“Under the influence of a broad trough of low pressure, the weather will be unsettled over the coast of southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea in the next few days. There will be showers and squally thunderstorms,” it said on Saturday.
