A waterspout might have formed off Sai Kung, the Hong Kong Observatory said as it issued an amber rainstorm warning signal at 7.15pm on Friday.

“There may be a waterspout over the waters of Sai Kung at around 7.10pm,” it said.

Yeung Kwok-chung, the forecaster’s senior scientific officer, said the Observatory monitored the radar image of the area and spotted highly convective atmospheric conditions in the area.

“We, thus, issued a notice that there may be a waterspout over the waters of Sai Kung at around 7.10pm,” Yeung said.

A waterspout is a rapidly rotating columnar vortex containing water droplets, linking between the base of a convective cloud and the water surface.

Former Observatory director Lam Chiu-ying said in a Facebook post the forecaster’s radar had captured a hook-shaped image.
