Hongkongers woke up to the coldest day so far this winter on Friday, with temperatures in urban areas going below 12 degrees Celsius (53.6 Fahrenheit).
The Hong Kong Observatory said the minimum temperature recorded at its headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui was 11.9 degrees at 7.30am, the lowest this season.
The mercury at the weather station on Hong Kong’s highest peak Tai Mo Shan, situated 955 metres (3,133ft) above sea levels, plunged to as low as four degrees in the morning.
This season’s first cold weather warning, which was issued on Thursday afternoon, remained in force.
The weather forecaster said temperatures on Friday would reach a maximum of around 19 degrees, adding it would be very dry during the day with moderate north to northeasterly winds.
It added that an area of low pressure over the southern part of the Philippines was bringing unsettled weather to the region, with weekend temperatures hovering between 13 and 21 degrees.
“The winter monsoon will continue to bring fine and dry weather to the coast of Guangdong in the next couple of days,” the Observatory said.
“The temperature difference between day and night will be rather large over the region.”
The area of low pressure is expected to approach the southern part of the South China Sea early next week, bringing along a band of cloud cover.
The weather will be cloudy with sunny periods next week, while temperatures on Christmas Day are expected to range between 16 and 20 degrees.
