Record high 400,000 Hong Kong residents listed on organ donation register
Health minister hails ‘selfless’ and ‘mighty’ acts, while advocate notes city still has one of lowest organ donation rates globally

A record high of about 400,000 Hong Kong residents have registered their intention to donate organs, the city’s health minister has said, while calling on more to join.
Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau said on Sunday there was still room for improvement in the latest figures from the Centralised Organ Donation Register, given the city’s population of 7.5 million people.
“Our aim is to achieve more breakthroughs. We hope that the figure on the register can record a transcending increase,” Lo said at an event to promote organ donation.
The latest number marks an increase from the more than 360,000 potential donors in 2023.
“About 400,000 Hong Kong residents have registered. It’s a record high,” Lo said.
He described organ donation as a “selfless” and “mighty” act as families facing loss and agony were willing to make other households complete.
