Hong Kong authorities will press on with a branding push for premium food through the unification of production standards and the establishment of a credible certification system in the next 12 months.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said on Tuesday it hoped the branding would cover different kinds of food such as agriculture, fisheries and meat products.

“We hope to provide residents with confidence [in local food],” said Mickey Lai Kin-ming, director of the department.

The department is set to establish certain standards and has consulted a local organisation to help in setting up a certification system, with a completion date scheduled for March next year.

He explained that the products might not compete on price, but the prices would be affordable for residents.

Lai said most of the food in the city was imported.
