Hong Kong confirmed three new cases of chikungunya fever on Wednesday, comprising a woman returning from Guangdong province’s Foshan and a father and son who had travelled to Bangladesh.
The Centre for Health Protection on Wednesday said that it was investigating the three imported cases.
Health authorities said the woman, 79, lived in Southern district and had visited the mainland Chinese city of Foshan from July 1 to 31 to see her relatives.
The patient was unable to recall being bitten by a mosquito, but developed a fever and joint pain on Monday and sought treatment at Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam the next day, the centre said.
The other two cases are a 55-year-old man with a chronic disease and his 10-year-old son, who both live in Kwai Tsing district. The pair travelled to Bangladesh between July 12 and August 3.
The father first developed symptoms in Bangladesh on July 27 and visited a clinic in Hong Kong on August 4.
The boy, meanwhile, recalled being bitten by a mosquito and developed similar symptoms on August 1, seeking treatment in Hong Kong two days later.
The centre said both father and son were transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung on Tuesday and were in stable conditions.
Health authorities have classified the two cases as imported due to the pair spending the entirety of the incubation period in Bangladesh.

Two household contacts who travelled with the father and son currently showed no signs of symptoms but were under medical surveillance, the centre said.
It said it had also notified health authorities in Guangdong and Bangladesh about the cases.
The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has already intensified anti-mosquito efforts in the neighbourhoods of confirmed cases and locations that the patients had visited after the onset of symptoms.
The measures include “intensive fogging” at densely vegetated areas near the locations to kill adult mosquitoes and weekly inspections to ensure the removal of stagnant water and the application of larvicides.
Health authorities earlier said such measures aimed to prevent the disease from being transmitted to mosquitoes in the city, which could in turn infect other residents.
Chikungunya fever is spread by mosquito bites, with cases typically developing fever and joint pain that can last for months or even years. Other potential symptoms include muscle pain, nausea and rashes.
Dr Albert Au Ka-wing, head of the centre’s communicable disease branch, reminded the public to take anti-mosquito measures during the rainy season to prevent mosquito-borne diseases.
He advised those returning from infected areas to continue to use insect repellent for 14 days, monitor their health and seek medical attention immediately if they felt unwell.
The centre said its public health laboratory services had sufficient testing capacity and were collaborating with the Hospital Authority to ensure timely testing in the event of an outbreak.
Last Saturday, Hong Kong recorded its first imported chikungunya fever case in six years, raising the risk of local transmissions in the city.
The case involved a 12-year-old boy who had travelled with his mother to Foshan’s Shunde district in the last two weeks of July.
