Hong Kong education authorities suspended all morning and whole-day classes on Monday due to squally thunderstorms, but the weather forecaster cancelled all rainstorm warnings less than two hours later.

The Observatory issued a red rainstorm warning signal at 1.15am before lowering it to amber at 6.05am. The amber signal was cancelled at 7.20am.

It then raised a second amber warning of the day at 10.20am and cancelled it at 11.45am.

At 5.30am, the Education Bureau said: “As the red rainstorm warning signal is now in force, classes of all morning and whole-day schools are suspended [on Monday].

“Schools should implement contingency plans and arrange staff to look after students who might arrive and ensure that conditions are safe before allowing students to return home.”
