Hong Kong issued the No 8 typhoon signal at 9.20pm on Sunday, with Tropical Storm Tapah expected to make landfall over western Guangdong on Monday morning, the Observatory said, triggering the suspension of school classes and disrupting the start of the work week for many.

The Observatory said there was a relatively lower chance of a higher storm signal unless Tapah drifted closer to the Pearl River Delta and intensified significantly.

“Tapah is expected to skirt within 200km [124 miles] southwest of Hong Kong around sunrise on [Monday] morning,” the forecaster said.

“It will then make landfall over western Guangdong. The gale or storm signal, No 8, will remain in force at least until 11am on Monday.”

The Education Bureau said classes at all day schools – including secondary schools, primary schools, special schools and kindergartens – would be suspended on Monday. Details regarding night class arrangements would be announced later.
