Hong Kong’s weather forecaster has said the No 3 warning signal will remain in force until at least noon on Sunday, with Typhoon Matmo expected to be closest to the city in the early hours.

The Observatory raised the No 3 typhoon signal at 12.20pm on Saturday.

“According to the present forecast, Matmo will be closest to Hong Kong in the small hours and Sunday morning, skirting more than 300km to the southwest of Hong Kong,” it said.

“Unless its gale-force winds get closer to the Pearl River [Delta], the chance of sustained gale-force winds generally over Hong Kong is relatively low.”

At 9pm, Matmo was estimated to be about 380km (235 miles) south of Hong Kong. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25km/h (15.5mph) across the northern part of the South China Sea and intensify gradually.
