Serious flooding risk in Hong Kong’s Yuen Long under amber rainstorm warning
Forecaster also reminds residents in the northern New Territories to take precautions to avoid possible flood damage
Hong Kong’s weather forecaster has warned of severe downpours and serious flooding in Yuen Long under the amber rainstorm signal.
The Hong Kong Observatory, which issued the warning signal at 5.30am on Tuesday, said hourly rainfall in the northwestern New Territories district was expected to exceed, or had already exceeded, 100mm.
“There is a severe rainstorm in Yuen Long district. It may cause serious flooding. Members of the public should stay on high alert and take necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to risks posed by heavy rain and flooding,” it said in a special warning.
The forecaster also reminded residents in the northern New Territories who were likely to be affected to take precautions to avoid possible flood damage and stay away from watercourses.
More than 30mm of rainfall was recorded across many areas on Tuesday morning, with totals exceeding 70mm in Tsuen Wan.
