Cooperation between Hong Kong and Guangdong will produce mutual gains in the development of the Greater Bay Area, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said on Sunday, pointing to the city’s strengths in basic research and as a regional aviation hub, and the mainland province’s mature production chains.

Lee’s comments came as he wrapped up his visit to the cities of Dongguan and Foshan on the third of his four-day bay area tour with bureau chiefs and 83 lawmakers.

He drew attention to a new logistics park he had visited in Dongguan, which started operations last Tuesday as a pilot scheme by Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

Lee said he believed Hong Kong’s position as a global aviation hub would be further enhanced with cargo from the bay area “seamlessly” transported through the city via the logistics park.

The park and the airside intermodal cargo pier at HKIA are designed under an Airport Authority Hong Kong sea-air transshipment initiative.

With the two facilities, processing of shipments from the bay area – such as security screenings and palletisations – can be completed in Dongguan, before goods are transported to Hong Kong airport for direct transshipment to overseas destinations. This saves Hong Kong customs from having to check the goods at the airport again.
