Nearly 60 per cent of Hong Kong residents have expressed support for a massive reclamation project off Lantau Island, development authorities said as they wrapped up a three-month public consultation on the controversial scheme on Thursday.

But some concern groups questioned the conclusions reached in the exercise, which were hailed by the development chief, and pointed to starkly contrasting findings of a survey commissioned by a leading environmental organisation last month.

The Kau Yi Chau Artificial Islands project, also known as the Lantau Tomorrow Vision plan, will create 1,000 hectares of new land connected to Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories by rail and road links.

It is also envisioned to become the city’s third biggest core business district and alleviate the acute shortage of land.

“Instead of going on discussing whether we should do it, we should now gather ideas on how to do it well,” Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn Hon-ho said on Thursday.
