World’s first Doraemon drone show to light up Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour on Saturday

  • 15-minute show will take place at the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, with 1,000 drones forming characters from the popular manga and animation series
  • Organiser recommends that spectators gather at Avenue of Stars for best view of the performance

One thousand drones will take flight for a world-first Doraemon show and light up Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour at 7.30pm on Saturday, a prelude to the largest exhibition of the beloved Japanese cartoon character set to take place in July.

The 15-minute show will be held at the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, with the drones forming characters from the popular manga and animation series, as well as a few of Doraemon’s famed futuristic gadgets such as the travel portal Anywhere Door and flying machine Take-Copter. The performance will also feature local voice actors.

Doraemon – the blue-and-white robot cat created by the late manga master Fujiko F. Fujio in 1969 – was last a major attraction in 2012 when 100 sculptures were showcased outside Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui by Hong Kong-based art studio AllRightsReserved.

AllRightsReserved is the organiser of the coming drone show and also the same company which floated two giant rubber ducks in Victoria Harbour last June.

The studio said it was collaborating with Fujiko Pro, the Japanese anime production company that also manages the Doraemon franchise, to put up the show.

AllRightsReserved recommended that spectators gather at the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui for the best view of the drone performance, adding that “areas along the Hong Kong Cultural Centre may have limited visibility angles for viewing”.

It also said spectators would not be able to “fully enjoy [the show] from the Hong Kong Island side”.

The organiser also noted police would be implementing crowd safety management measures, adding that certain areas between the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Hong Kong Museum of Art would be cordoned off on Saturday.

The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau said on Wednesday that the exhibition in July, called 100% Doraemon & Friends Tour, was added to the list of more than 100 mega events taking place in the second half of the year covering artistic and creative activities, sports competitions and festive shows announced earlier.

The mega events are part of the city’s bid to kick-start Hong Kong’s sluggish post-pandemic tourism recovery and boost the city’s international appeal.
