Glittering array of new Hong Kong events lined up as city bids to revitalise economy and boost tourism

  • Events run the gamut from high fashion, art and architecture to sports, technology and business
  • The drive is part of a government strategy that will see more than 100 separate events held in the city over the next few months

Hong Kong will debut a string of new mega events in the second half of the year, ranging from exhibitions to carnivals and sports competitions.

The line-up is a crucial part of the government’s strategy to attract tourists and revitalise the economy with more than 100 different events planned for the next few months.

Here, the Post presents a comprehensive list of the attractions being staged in the city for the first time.

June – “I.M. Pei: Life is Architecture” exhibition

The retrospective exhibition designed to showcase the life and work of legendary architect Ieoh Ming Pei will be held in the M+ Museum’s West Gallery from June 29 to January 5 next year.

The Chinese-American, born in Guangzhou in 1917, had an illustrious career that spanned more than seven decades and included the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, the landmark Louvre Pyramid in Paris, the National Gallery of Art’s East Building in Washington and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha.

July – Chinese Kungfu x Dance Carnival

Choreographed to blend Chinese martial arts and dance, the “Chinese Kungfu x Dance Carnival” will run from July 12 to 14.

Highlights will include a “Thousand-Person Martial Arts Performance”, to be staged three times, one for each day of the carnival. The public can watch free of charge at Piazza A-C of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Gala dance performances will also be held every night from 7.45pm to 9.45pm at the centre’s Grand Theatre, with tickets priced from HK$220 (US$28) to HK$880.

July – A Laugh at the World: James Wong

A celebration of the life and work of the late Hong Kong songwriter, the exhibit will showcase the cultural integration of James Wong Jim’s works.

It will run from July 17 to February 10, 2025 at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. Admission is free.

August – 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship

Hong Kong will host the World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship for the first time from August 15 to 24 at the Mong Kok Stadium.

Top teams from around the globe will compete in what the Tourism Board said was one of the biggest and most competitive international lacrosse tournaments.

September – Exhibition for the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China

An exhibition to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the founding of modern China. Most details have yet to be announced, but it will be held from September to December at the Museum of History and Science Museum.

September – Special exhibition about the origins of Chinese civilisation

The Hong Kong Palace Museum will also host its own exhibition in September to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.

The museum will showcase the origins of Chinese civilisation through the latest archaeological discoveries. More details will be released later.

September – Guo Pei exhibition

A fashion-lover’s dream organised to highlight the work of Chinese couturier Guo Pei, who has seamlessly blended Chinese design, European royal fashion, architectural themes and the botanical world over a career that has spanned 30 years. The exhibition at the M+ Museum will open on September 21.

September – 5th Conference of the Belt and Road Initiative Tax Administration Cooperation Forum

Representatives of tax administrations from jurisdictions involved in Beijing’s belt and road strategy, as well as representatives of international organisations, academic institutions and businesses will gather in the city for the first time between September 24 and 26.

October – 2024 WBSC Baseball5 World Cup

The first pitch of the second World Baseball Softball Confederation’s Baseball5 World Cup will be thrown on October 7.

The tournament, in its first visit to the city, will run to October 12 and be held at the Central Harbourfront Event Space.

Baseball5 is a bat-and-ball game with similar rules to baseball and involves two teams of five players.

October – Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo

The first Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo is hoped to become a flagship event for the city.

The weeklong event will involve seven major themes including “Expo Programmes”, “International Showcases”, “Pitch Sessions”, “Talks”, “Exhibition”, “Cultural Offerings”, and “Tour to Guangzhou / Shenzhen”, as well as a variety of performances. It will be held between October 14 and 18 in the West Kowloon Cultural District and other locations.

October – SmartCon 2024

The annual premier Web3 conference organised by blockchain network Chainlink will take place at the Kerry Hotel in Hung Hom from October 30 to 31.

Thousands are expected to gather to exchange views on developments in the blockchain industry.

October – The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival

The major arts festival is provisionally scheduled to be held from October to November.

The event, the fourth of its type, was organised by cultural authorities from mainland China, Macau and Hong Kong.

Previous events involved theatre productions, dance and musical performances.

November – Super Terminal Expo

The first Super Terminal Expo will focus on airport, port, railway, logistics and construction innovations. Leaders from the aviation, air cargo, transport and logistics industries are expected to gather for the event.

November – Hong Kong 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships

A government endorsed “M” Mark sporting event, the championships from November 30 to December 4 at the Hong Kong Coliseum are regarded as the highest level of Taekwondo competition in the world, apart from the Olympics.

November – Hong Kong Fashion Design Week

The flagship event from November 25 to 30, mentioned in Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s policy address last October, will highlight city designers and developments in fashion and textile design brands. More details will be announced later.

December – Maison&Objet Design Factory

France’s major trade show for interior design will hold an exhibition at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from December 5 to 7.

December – The 11th Asian Congress of Paediatric Infectious Diseases

A prestigious global event for experts and professionals in the field of paediatric infectious diseases to share ideas, research findings and experience.

It will be held from December 13 to 15 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong's Henry Cheng International Conference Centre.

December – Special exhibition on cultural and artistic exchanges between China and France, mostly in the 18th century

An exhibition to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France.

Further details of the event will be released later.
