Hong Kong’s appetite for dining out continued to diminish as the latest figures showed a more than 2 per cent drop in business for the second quarter of the year compared with the same period in 2023.

Government statistics released on Friday showed restaurant receipts between April and June were HK$26.9 billion (US$3.4 billion), a drop of 2.1 per cent year on year.

Authorities highlighted changed spending habits among visitors and Hongkongers as a major reason for the fall and said there was no relief on the horizon.

The volume of restaurant receipts also fell by 4.6 per cent compared with the same period last year.

A government spokesman said the result came “amid the changing consumption patterns of visitors and residents”.

“Looking ahead, the business performance of restaurants should still face pressure in the near term,” he added.
