Hong Kong should follow the country in developing high-end smart manufacturing, John Lee says on visit to Productivity Council
Hong Kong should step up its promotion of “new quality productive forces”, the city’s leader has said after visiting a government-funded agency tasked with boosting productivity.
The term, first introduced by Chinese President Xi Jinping last year, refers to productivity led by technological innovation that breaks away from the traditional economic model.
“Hong Kong must seize the opportunities brought about by the strong support of national policies,” Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said on Wednesday after visiting the Productivity Council for a policy address consultation.
“We should follow the country in developing high-end smart manufacturing, promoting new quality productive forces with higher speed and efficiency, realising new industrialisation, transforming and upgrading traditional industries, as well as nurturing the emerging and future industries.”
On his visit, Lee met a few companies to understand how traditional industries upgraded their production with technology.
They included a Chinese medicine manufacturer which significantly upscaled its production capacity with the help of a smart production line with financial support and technical help from authorities and the council.
